What is Business Process Improvement?

Business process improvement is the redesign of business processes and the associated systems and organisational structures to achieve an improvement in business performance.

Working in Partnership

Effective business process improvement relies on working in partnership with the people who own and use the process. This approach is adopted because it is the owners and users of the process who have detailed knowledge about the process – how it works and how it can be improved.

The Continuous Improvement Units (CIU) acts as a coach to the process owner. The unit brings expertise in business process improvement methodology to the project.

The Business Process Improvement Model

The process improvement model utilised by the CIU is shown in the figure to the right. The steps of planning, analysis and integration are undertaken by the process owner and the CIU, in consultation with the process stakeholders.

The implementation step may involve the CIU, process owner and any other parties with role in the implementation plan. The review and ongoing maintenance of the implemented changes becomes the responsibility ofthe process owner.
